MUSCAT: Oman’s healthcare system is buckling as a record surge in Covid-19 cases puts pressure on hospital beds, the country’s Supreme Committee has observed.
In a statement issued while imposing an indefinite night lockdown starting from June 20, the Supreme Committee urged the public to continue preventive measures to contain the spread of the virus.
“The committee studies reports related to the epidemiological situation in the Sultanate and the big rise in infections, deaths, and hospital admissions to ICU resulting from the coronavirus disease. The committee has observed that the national health system is coming under unprecedented heavy pressure in handling coronavirus cases,” the statement said.

Oman on Sunday registered over 5,300 new infections and 84 deaths, while more than 400 people are admitted in intensive care units.
