MUSCAT: A total of five commercial activities were ordered to close in Oman in less than a week, while a top hotel was fined for violating the Supreme Committee decisions, as authorities have intensified inspection campaigns across the country in the wake of rising coronavirus cases.

The violations, found during inspections conducted were mostly related to physical distancing and allowing more than 30 percent of prescribed capacity in ballrooms and celebration halls. On Thursday, the authorities closed the London Centre store in Ibra, while InterContinental Muscat hotel was issued a notice for allowing for organising an event without committing to the authorized capacity of the celebration halls.

Speaking to The Arabian Stories, a top official at Muscat Municipality said: “It is important for all commercial activities to follow preventive measures to contain the spread of the virus. We are closely monitoring the market. They (commercial activities) will have to face legal accountability if they violate the decisions of the Supreme Committee.”

On June 17, Oman registered 35 deaths due to COVID-19, the highest in GCC. The total coronavirus cases in the country touched 242,723, including 2626 deaths.
