MUSCAT: A surgeon was placed under suspension pending inquiry for alleged negligence over the death of a woman after she underwent liposuction at a private hospital in Muscat, the Ministry of Health said on Tuesday.

Omani citizen Munira Al Muqbali died after she underwent liposuction at a private health institution. According to the hospital authorities the surgeon who performed the operation is not affiliated with the hospital, but rather “rents the hospital’s operating rooms, and he works for another private institution.”

In a statement issued on Tuesday, MOH said it has ordered an investigation into the matter and will take all legal measures with the concerned authorities.

“The doctor has been suspended from the practice as a precaution until the investigation into what happened by the concerned authorities ends,” MOH said.

The Ministry also affirmed that it is keen on the “safety of medical practice in public and private sectors, and that it will not tolerate any breach of professional standards.”
