MUSCAT: Over 40,000 expatriates working in the government sector will be replaced by Omanis in a phased manner, a top official at Ministry of Labour said.
According to Sheikh Nasr bin Amer Al Hosni, the Undersecretary of Labour said as part of the Omanisation drive, 7,000 expats from public sector will be replaced by Omanis by the end of this year. “There are around 40,000 expats working in the public sector and we are looking to replace 7,000 to 10,000 employees a year in a phased manner to replace them with Omani citizens,” Al Hosni said.
Meanwhile, over 3,000 expatriates were replaced by Omanis in private sector. “In the private sector we were planning to replace 12,000 people this year but due to the current situations, we managed to find 3,010 positions for Omanis which is still a good number,” Al Hosni added.

According to the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), Oman’s expatriate population dropped to 38.8 per cent this year.
