MUSCAT : Ministry of Health has advised citizens and residents against non-essential travel after Oman registered the first case with mutant COVID-19 strain.
On Tuesday, MOH confirmed that a resident who arrived from UK tested positive with the new coronavirus strain. “The Ministry of Health calls on citizens and residents to abide by the decisions of the Supreme Committee regarding “traveling outside the country except cases of extreme necessity,” the statement from MOH said.
Meanwhile, health authorities have warned against an increase in COVID-19 cases after the resident was registered with new mutant coronavirus strain. ”One of the challenges that we may face is the increase in the number of cases due to the new rapidly spreading mutation, and thus it may cause an increase in pressure on health institutions, whether hospitalisation or Intensive care,” said Dr Saif bin Salim Al Abri, Director General of Infectious Diseases for Surveillance and Control at the Ministry of Health.

“This gene mutation mostly affects young age groups less than 20 years old,” he added.
