MUSCAT: Have you got an SMS from an unknown number informing that your ATM has been blocked for failing to update your resident card? Does the message then instruct you to call a certain cell phone to ensure that your ATM card works properly?
You are not alone. Scores of Oman residents have got similar messages in the last few weeks are termed as “scams” by top banks and experts.
“The whole intention is to steal your money and you need to be cautious,” said a top cyber security expert based in Muscat.

“Last week I received a call from an unknown number stating that my bank card needs to be updated and they were asking for the card details. When I told them I will contact the bank directly, they cut the call,” said Robin Sebastian, Director of Mesdac Solutions.
“I received a WhatsApp message saying my card is blocked. I didn’t respond to it but in many cases people reply back and lose their hard earned money,” said an expat worker Mohammed Adil.
Banks in the country also sent SMS alerts cautioning its customers, while Royal Oman Police (ROP) have repeatedly urged residents to be vigilant.
Early last month, several people were arrested in Muscat Governorate on charges of online fraud after they duped people by obtaining their bank details. According to ROP, the suspects pretended to be bank employees send text messages to victims on their phone, telling them that their bank cards needed to be updated.
“People have to be cautious while getting such messages or calls from unknown numbers. You must never reveal your bank details to any party,” ROP added.
