MUSCAT : The Consumer Protection Authority has warned shops not to raise prices of soft drinks without any justification.

Responding to a query from a citizen, CPA also said that the government’s decision to impose 50 per cent tax on sweetened drinks does not include soft drinks “as it is already under taxation since 2019.”

On October 1, Oman Tax Authority introduced taxation on sweetened drinks. Beverages containing added sugar or sweeteners that are ready-to-drink, concentrates, gels, powders, extracts, or any form that can be converted into sugar sweetened beverage, will be subject to a 50 per cent excise tax.

“We would like to inform you that the excise tax on soft drinks has been in effect since June 15, 2019, and it does not come under sweetened drinks tax category. Any increase in prices of soft drinks without justification is a clear violation of the law,” CPA added.
