Oman plans to convert ancient city of Qalhat into archaeological park

MUSCAT: Oman has plans to transform the ancient city of Qalhat into an archaeological park to attract tourists, a top official at the
Ministry of Heritage and Tourism said.

Speaking to the media, Sultan bin Ali Al Muqbali, Director of the World Heritage Sites Department at the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism said: “The ancient city of Qalhat is listed on the World Heritage List, and the Ministry has plans to turn it into an archaeological park and a tourist distination that will attract visitors.”

Once the capital of ancient Oman, the city of Qalhat was placed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites for its historical significance and its role in Oman’s evolution between the 11th and 15th centuries.
