MUSCAT: Shopping malls across the country have reopened last week following three-month of closure, however, children below 12 and adults above the age of 60 years are prohibited from entering.
Businesses are gradually reopening across Oman and the easing of restrictions is paving the way for a return to normal life.
But age-specific restrictions have meant many families are still unable to take their children or elderly parents to malls.

Speaking to reporters, Dr. Ahmed Al Futaisi, Minister of Transport said the Supreme Committee (SC) took the decision to protect the health interests of these two vulnerable groups. “The conditions of preventing children and over 60 years of age from being taken to commercial centres have been put in place in order to maintain their health,” Al Futaisi clarified.
According to health experts, children usually find it difficult to follow guidelines and wear masks and maintain social distance while adults above the age of 60 usually suffer from heart disease, diabetes and hypertension that compromises their immunity and pushes them into a high-risk category.
“These two age categories are at higher risk and we appreciate SC for the directives. Our priority is to safeguard every customer,” said a General Manager of a popular shopping mall in Muscat.
According to the Minister, the technical team will study the condition and based on their recommendations SC will consider lifting the sanctions in future.
The total coronavirus cases in the country has touched 42,555.
