Muscat: In what is a huge relief for Indians living in Oman, the Indian government on Monday extended the due date for linking Aadhaar card with Permanent Account Number (PAN) from December 31st to 31st March 2020.

“The due date for linking of PAN with Aadhaar as specified under sub-section 2 of Section 139AA of the Income-tax Act,1961 has been extended from 31st December, 2019 to 31st March, 2020.Notification no.107 of 2019 dated 30/12/2019 issued by CBDT.” a statement from Income Tax of India said.

This is the third time the due date has been extended.

While it is a fact that a non-resident Indian (NRI) is not required to have an Aadhaar or a PAN (Permanent Account Number), it’s a must to have the cards linked, if one has them.

As per Indian government rules, a PAN card is mandatory for NRIs if they have a taxable income in India or want to make investments in the country.
“It’s true that Aadhaar card isn’t mandatory for NRIs as it cant be issued unless you stay in India for 183 days. But in case if you have both Aadhaar and PAN and if you want to make any financial transactions in future, you need to link them both,” said a financial expert based in Muscat told The Arabian Stories
