New Delhi: Thousands defied lockdown declared across Uttar Pradesh, parts of Karnataka and Delhi as people hit the streets across at least 10 states in protest against the Centre’s new law on citizenship.
In the national capital New Delhi, hundreds of protesters were taken into custody as they defied Section 144, a law banning the gathering of more than four persons.
Mobile Internet and SMS have been shut in many areas of Delhi.

Left leaders Sitaram Yechury and D Raja were also detained in Delhi, news agency Press Trust of India reported. “We are being detained,” CPI general Secretary D Raja said just before he was put into a bus by the police. — Agencies
