Shura elections: More than 2,500 voters in Oman pressed ‘none of the above candidate’ button

Wilayats of Sohar, Saham, and Al Suwaiq voters topped the list in choosing.

MUSCAT:More than 2,500 voters opted for the none of the above (NOTA) button in the recently concluded Majlis Al Shura elections, according to data by the Ministry of Interior. 

As many as 637 candidates contested for the 86-seats in the Majlis Al Shura elections held on Sunday. 

According to the Ministry of Interior’s website, around 2,769 voters pressed the NOTA button, popularly known as White Card. Wilayats of Sohar, Saham, and Al Suwaiq voters topped the list in choosing the white card with more than 200 of these votes registered at each wilayat.

350,581 people voted  

Interestingly, from the 713,335 active electoral voters, only 350,581 people voted on Sunday. “The percentage voting rose slightly above 49 per cent, including the votes cast by Omanis abroad,” said Dr Khalifa bin Mohammed al Hadhrami, Vice-President of the Supreme Court and Chairman of the Higher Election Committee at a press conference held Grand Hyatt Hotel.  According to figures presented by the election committee team, 28 candidates were PhD holders, 75 with Masters, 195 Bachelor degree holders, 65 Higher Diploma holders and 274 holders of General Education Diploma. Among the 86-members, two women were also elected to the ninth term of Majlis Al Shura.
