PACA issues caution as Tropical Storm Hikaa set to make landfall in Oman

Hikaa is expected to bring heavy rains to South Al Sharqiyah and Al Wusta Governorates.

Muscat: The Public Authority for Civil Aviation (PACA) has warned people to stay away from low areas and avoid crossing wadis as Tropical Storm Hikaa is expected to make landfall in Oman on Tuesday.

According to latest weather bulletin issued by PACA, Hikaa is about 200 kilometers away from Masirah Island. The storm is expected to bring heavy rains accompanied with wind to South Al Sharqiyah and Al Wusta Governorates.

“Landfall is expected to be between South Al Sharqiyah and Al Wusta this evening,” the statement read.

“The direct effects over South Al sharqiyah and Al Wusta wil be starting from today afternoon which will be associated wjth heavy rain between 50-80 milimeters and gale winds betweeb 45-55knots,” the statement added.

Ferries suspended

Meanwhile, Oman’s National Ferries Company (NFC) has said it will suspend its service on Shannah-Masirah route from this evening until further notice. A statement from NFC said: “In view of the developing Cyclonic Storm Hikaa in the Arabian Sea and associated adverse weather conditions, NFC temporarily suspends trips along Shannah–Masirah route. “The trips’ suspension is for passengers’ safety and comfort, shall take effect this evening, Monday, 23rd September.”

Avoid venturing out to sea

PACA urged residents to exercise caution in the approach of Hikaa. Those in the region are urged to keep away from low-lying areas and avoid crossing wadis (valleys).

PACA also advised fishermen and seafarers to avoid venturing out to sea and follow the latest and updated bulletins from the National Multi Hazard Early Warning Centre.
