Oman focuses on sustainable tourism, says Maitha Al Mahrouqi

According to Maitha Al Mahrouqi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Tourism, the government is looking at new destinations to attract tourists to Oman.

MUSCAT: The government is making significant efforts to enhance the country’s offerings in tourism sector while emphasising on sustainable development.

Speaking at an event on Wednesday, Maitha Al Mahrouqi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Tourism also said that the key strategy of the government is to understand the DNA of a tourist. “When we look into new destinations, we look at the needs of these markets. We have to understand the DNA of a tourist. What will they require? Not only from services but how can we really impress the experience of a tourist. That is the strategy of Ministry of Tourism,” she noted.

According to the data issued by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), the number of tourists coming to Oman has more than doubled in the last 10 years, according to data issued by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).

According to NCSI report, Oman welcomed 3.24 million visitors in 2018, up from 1.54 million in 2008. Five years ago in 2014 this figure stood at 2.23 million. Both the amount of money and the amount of time spent by tourists on average has nearly quadrupled in that time.

Highlighting the influx of tourists from China, Al Mahrouqi informed that there is a 41 per cent increase in visitors. “Each one of us talk about China market in a different way. For Oman, China is a great market. And we are exploring the possibilities of attracting more Chinese tourists to Oman, she added.
