MUSCAT: A picture of a new type of vehicle registration number plate that looks thinner and has fewer digits than traditional plates have gone viral in Oman. However, the Royal Oman Police (ROP) has now clarified that such plates are prohibited to use within Oman and are “temporarily given” to those travelling to non-Arab countries.
In a statement issued on Thursday, ROP also reiterated that these are not “new number plates” that will be used on vehicles in Oman soon as claimed by many on social media. “In relation to what has been in circulation on social media about a new type of vehicle registration plate being issued, the Directorate General of Traffic would like to explain that these are a type of temporary plate that have been issued by the ROP for years.”
“Although these plates have been in issue, they are not for use in Oman at all, but are used to identify Omani vehicles outside of Oman,” the statement said.

Car owners can request for these plates if they wish to take their vehicles into non-Arab countries. “But these plates are strictly prohibited to use inside Oman,” the statement added.
