More than 100,000 titles to be featured at book festival in Muscat

Bookfest 2019 will have dedicated sections for 12 different Indian languages.

MUSCAT: Al Bhaj Books, will showcase around 100,000 books at the upcoming ‘Bookfest 2019’, which will held under the aegis of Indian Embassy and the Indian Social Club Oman (ISC) from April 24 to April 27 at ISC multipurpose hall in Darsait.

These books include fiction and non-fiction titles, academic books, study guides, cookery books, colouring books and charts for all ages. Billed as a part of the celebration of the 150thbirth centenary of Mahatma Gandhi, Bookfest 2019 will have dedicated sections for 12 different Indian languages including Hindi, English, Malayalam, Marathi, Gujarati, Urdu and Arabic. 

Speaking about the event, HE Munu Mahawar, Indian Ambassador said: “The response we received last year was tremendous and we decided to host the second edition this year with more publishers joining hands.” 

Dr. Sathish Nambiar, Chairman of Indian Social Club said that ISC said the fest will help foster the habit of reading among children and adults alike. “This is an age where we spend less time on reading and more time on the internet. Book fest’s like these will help to get the new generation reading,” he said. 

P.M. Shoukathali, Managing Director of Al Bhaj books said more than 20,000 people attended the event last year. “This year we are expecting that the number will grow further. The fest will now be an annual affair,” he said. A 5 meter tall painting of Mahatma Gandhi will be exhibited at the venue. 

On the sidelines of the bookfest different competitions have been organized for the children, which include a colouring competition, poetry recitation, elocution competitions, and an essay writing competition. Entry is free of charge and registration for competitions can be done at the Indian Social Club Reception on or before April 22.
