MUSCAT – The CPA notice, under its ‘Be aware to be safe’ slogan, stated that chewing tobacco is banned as per the Decision No. 206/2023, and that violators would be levied an administrative fine of not less than OMR 100 and not exceeding OMR 1000; the fine shall be doubled to OMR 2000 in the event of a repeat of the violation.
As per the Decision, the seized quantities of chewing tobacco (non-smoked) shall be destroyed in accordance with the regulations in force in the Consumer Protection Authority. Listing its reasons for ban, the CPA pointed out that it contains Indian betel leaf, tobacco and tobacco derivatives. It also noted that its use affects nerves, causes oral cancer and leads to a change in blood pressure and heart palpitations, and the heart beat becomes abnormal (according to the World Health Organization).
