MUSCAT: People in Oman can use their own cars to pick up and drop off their friends, as long as they don’t charge them for it, the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology confirmed on Sunday.
The clarification comes days after the Ministry registered over 2,000 illegal transport violations. Many expatriates had also expressed their concerns on social media regarding the whopping fines being imposed by officials. As per the Law, a fine of OMR 200 is imposed on the driver, by the ministry officials, if caught and booked for illegal transportation.
However, the Ministry on Sunday clarified its stance. It stated: “The inspection teams came across a number of violations, including violations of the requirements for carrying out transport activities with regard to the transportation of goods and ferrying individuals.”

The statement further noted that the inspection teams have been instructed to ensure that only drivers who violate the provisions of the executive regulations of the Land Transport Law should be fined and that it did not include people who transport their acquaintances and friends without any “financial reward.”
The Ministry also said that if people have been penalized for ferrying their friends or relatives, they can submit their grievances about the violations for review at the Land Transport Department at the Ministry’s General Office or the Roads Departments in the governorates within 15 days from the date of its issuance.
