Oman launches ‘Gulf Programming’ competition

Sultan Qaboos University announced the start of activities for the 10th edition of ‘Gulf Programming Contest’, with the participation of 150 students from 28 Gulf colleges and universities.

MUSCAT : The Contest, organized by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology in cooperation with Sultan Qaboos University, Omantel and the Code Academy, aims to discover and develop talents in the field of programming, logical thinking skills, problem solving and designing algorithms to develop software solutions that keep pace with technical progress by exploiting the intelligence industry and revolution techniques.


The two-day national initiative aims stimulate the sector and hone the participants’ future skills, so as to qualify with digital competencies.


The idea of the competition is based on teams of three students from Gulf colleges and universities competing to solve a set of life problems that require designing computer algorithms to be applied as computer programs during the competition sessions; they will have to use one of the high-end programming languages such as Python, Java and C Plus.


The competition is held in one session, lasting 5 continuous hours, and the teams are given the same number of questions ranging in their levels; the teams have to solve the largest number of questions during the specified period, so that at the end of the competition, the result of the participating teams is calculated based on the number of correct solutions and speed of solution for each question, and the least number of attempts to solve every question.

The participants have been divided into 49 teams, comprising of 29 teams from the Sultanate of Oman, 9 teams from Saudi Arabia, 3 teams from Kuwait and 8 teams from the United Arab Emirates.


Gulf Programming is an independent regional competition with a leading committee made up of a group of university professors from the GCC countries.
