MUSCAT: The Royal Hospital teamed with the Department of General Surgery and the National Center for Cardiac Medicine and Surgery, for the first time to perform a surgical procedures in advanced endoscopic operations in thoracic and esophageal areas.

These included laparoscopic resection of the lung lobe, laparoscopic esophageal resection, laparoscopic resection of the thymus gland, in addition to the resection of a tumor in the trachea stem.

Performing these operations is of great value to the surgical departments of the Royal Hospital with cases of benign and malignant tumors in the chest area.

Dr. Yassin Muhammad Reda Al Lawati, Consultant Thoracic and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon of Royal Hospital, said that there are many health and surgical services provided by the Thoracic and Esophageal Surgery Unit and it will serve large segments of a society. “There are many aspects that will strengthen the researchers, studies and training of resident surgeons on local surgery programs,” he said.

“The surgical team works in an integrated system with other specialties, such as anesthesiologists, intensive care physicians, various nursing teams, radiologists, oncologists, radiation and chemotherapy and histologists. This is to ensure the evaluation of cases and the provision of appropriate and correct surgical solutions in proportion to each case,” Dr. Yassin briefed.

The advanced laparoscopic operations in general have become a too draw because of its impact in relieving post-operative pain and improving recovery stages apart from reducing the patient’s stay in hospitals.
