MUSCAT: In a rare case and marathon procedure, a medical team at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital successfully performed a catheterization procedure for two holes in the atrial septum for a nearly incurable case.
The patient suffered from orthopedic dyspnea – a sharp drop in the oxygen level.

The team comprising Dr. Fahd bin Abdullah Al Kindi, senior consultant in interventional and structural catheters and Dr. Khalfan bin Salem Al Sunaidi, senior consultant in pediatric structural catheters – successfully performed the procedure and closed the two holes. Result? The patient’s oxygen level rose from 65% to 90% even while sitting.
It is noteworthy that orthopedic shortness of breath is one of the rare diseases seen in general, and openings of the heart are one of its rarest.
