MUSCAT: Johnson & Johnson (J&J) said it will stop selling its popular talc-based baby powder globally in 2023, two-years after it ended sales in the United States and Canada after the product drew thousands of consumer safety lawsuits.
In a statement issued by the company said: “As part of a worldwide portfolio assessment, we have made the commercial decision to transition to an all cornstarch-based baby powder portfolio.”
“As a result of this transition, talc-based Johnson’s baby powder will be discontinued globally in 2023,” the statement added.

The company also said 33,000 bottles of talcum powder would be recalled “out of an abundance of caution”.
The company is facing about 38,000 lawsuits claiming its talc products caused cancer due to contamination with asbestos, a known carcinogen. “We continuously evaluate and optimise our portfolio to best position the business for long-term growth,” the company said. “This transition will help simplify our product offerings, deliver sustainable innovation, and meet the needs of our consumers, customers and evolving global trends,” the statement added.
