Muscat Municipality bans car washing services in residential areas

Such services will be limited to industrial areas and gas stations, the Muscat Municipality has said.

MUSCAT: The Muscat Municipality in Oman has issued a resolution which suspends all licenses engaged car washing and polishing in commercial and residential buildings.

The authorities made the decision taking into account the societal and organisational aspects, and framing the permitting space according to specific areas commensurate with the nature of some activities.

This decision came in view of residents complaining about increasing water leakage and car wash waste due to cleaning and polishing cars in residential areas. The resolutions was passed in the view of maintaining cleanliness and public health in residential neighbourhoods.

The municipality said that establishments licensed for cleaning and polishing cars in commercial and residential commercial buildings were given a grace period of five years to adjust their status. 

The use of dry cleaning equipment is adhered to in accordance with Article (87) of the health requirements contained in Administrative Decision No. (219/2019) regarding the issuance of the health requirements regulation for activities related to public health.

Muscat Municipality has stressed the need for community awareness while choosing the appropriate site for such conducting such business. Taking into account the health and technical requirements for practicing the activity, it has been limited to industrial areas and gas stations.

The authorities have similarly alerted all business owners eager to start car washing services to take caution before investing capital in unauthorised locations and also verify the licenses needed to start such businesses.
