MUSCAT: The Royal Oman Police, represented by the General Department for Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Control, attaches great importance to addressing the fight against narcotics.
The authorities have taken a number of security measures necessary to carry out proactive operations to prevent the entry and smuggling of narcotic substances into the Sultanate of Oman.
Lieutenant-Colonel Sulaiman bin Saif Al-Tamtami, Director of Case Affairs Department at the General Administration of Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Control, said, “The seizures of smuggling crimes demonstrated the high efficiency of the combatants in confronting international smuggling networks and arresting their members.”

Regarding the challenges faced to thwart smuggling attempts, he said that drug crimes are organised, sophisticated and complex. There is a lot of danger and diversity in how these crimes are committed and concealed by criminals.
He pointed to the challenges faced by the control operations, including qualitative challenges imposed by the nature of drug crime. This takes the nature of rapid development in types, influence and means of communication, explaining that the phenomenon of drug abuse is a chronic phenomenon. In such cases, the recovering person is vulnerable to relapse, in addition to serious and contagious diseases for addicts and the danger of their transmission.
The Sultanate of Oman is capable and sufficiently ready to confront smuggling crimes. The Royal Oman Police and other formations support the General Department for Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Control, led by the Coast Guard Police, in coordination with other military and security agencies. These agencies played a major role in controlling a large number of crimes such as smuggling in Oman.
The drug problem requires strong societal solidarity and community partnership is crucial in curbing this problem.
Oman has placed stringent punishment for smuggling crimes, which includes death sentence or life imprisonment along with a fine of up to OMR 50,000.
