MUSCAT: A medical team of specialists in endocrinology at the Royal Hospital was successfully able to perform a rare surgery.

The surgery involved the removal of a thyroid gland weighing about 973.7 grams from the neck of a patient who had been suffering from hypertrophy for five years.

Dr. Amr Ahmed Reda, consultant thyroid surgeon and general surgeon in the Surgical Department of the Royal Hospital, explained that this process is a complex and rare operation due to the size and nature of the tumor.

This kind of surgery also needs a lot of precision and skill because of the presence of the tumour in an area holding sensitive organs, arteries, veins and nerves that control other body functions.
