MUSCAT: Oman’s long-serving oil minister His Excellency Mohammed Bin Hamad Al Rumhi on Thursday stepped down after leading the country’s energy sector for 25 years.

His Excellency Engineer Salem Al Aufi who was appointed to the post in a cabinet reshuffle announced on state television.
“We would like to take this opportunity to extend our sincere appreciation to Dr. Mohammed bin Hamad Al Rumhi for his efforts in developing the Energy and Minerals sector,” state-owned energy firm OQ said in a statement on Twitter.

Al Rumhi was appointed as the Minister of Oil and Gas (now Ministry of Energy and Minerals) in December 1997 by the late His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said. Before his current position, Al Rumhy held academic faculty positions in petroleum engineering and served as Assistant Dean of Engineering at Sultan Qaboos University and he was awarded the Mitsumae Intl. Foundation Fellowship in Tokyo.
Oman has recorded a budget surplus of OMR 357 million at the end of the first quarter, thanks to growing oil revenues. The surplus funds will be directed to stimulating economic recovery, developing projects, and reducing the level of debts. Strong oil revenues, which surged to OMR 1.57 billion year-on-year, were the main driver of the solid figures.
