MUSCAT: The Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) arrested three expatriates for trading and selling chewing tobacco (non-smoked tobacco) and the local court fined them a total of OMR 4,000.
It is illegal to circulate chewing tobacco in any form and under any name in the country. In the first case, CPA team in Dhofar governorate arrester an expat worker for trading and selling chewing tobacco in a commercial store in Dhofar, which is in violation of the Consumer Protection Law in accordance with Resolution No. 256/2015, amended by Resolution No. (301/2016). CPA seized the products after he confessed to the crime.
“Without prejudice to the penal penalties stipulated in the aforementioned Consumer Protection Law, anyone who violates the provisions of this decision shall be punished with an administrative fine of OMR 1,000. Accordingly, legal measures were taken against him, as an administrative fine of OMR 1,000 was imposed,” CPA said in the statement.

In another case, CPA authorities arrested two expats in Rustaq for selling chewed tobacco. “During their field visits to shops and markets in the state, the judicial control officers arrested two expatriate workers who traded and sold chewed tobacco in the two shops in which they work. After confronting them, they admitted to the crime,
thus violating the Consumer Protection Law in accordance with Resolution No. 256/2015, amended by the Resolution No. (301/2016), and accordingly, legal measures were taken against them, as an administrative fine was imposed on the first violator in the amount of OMR 2000, and on the second violator OMR 1000,” CPA added.
