MUSCAT: The General Directorate of Consumer Protection in North Al Batinah Governorate was recently able to recover an amount of OMR 17,000 in favour of a consumer.
This move is a part of the efforts made by the Directorate to resolve complaints received from consumers in a friendly manner.
The directorate received a complaint from a consumer stating that he had purchased a vehicle from a commercial establishment, and after receiving the vehicle and on the same day he noticed a malfunction in the vehicle’s transmission.

This prompted him to request a replacement of the vehicle, but the institution refused to replace or return the amount.
The consumer submitted his complaint to the Directorate, who handles the procedures in such cases. The complaint was investigated and based on the report of the technical expert, it was confirmed that there were defects in the vehicle.
Accordingly a friendly settlement contract was reached between the two parties that the institution would take back the defective vehicle, and return the amount that the consumer paid for its purchase.
In accordance with the text of Article (25), the supplier is obliged to return the commodity and refund its value, exchange or repair it free of charge, in the event that the consumer discovers a defect in it.
The Consumer Protection Authority has called upon suppliers to adhere to the laws and regulations in force in the field of consumer protection, to fulfill the requirements and obligations imposed on them, and to ensure that the commodity is inspected before selling it to the consumer.
