MUSCAT: The Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority has been dealing with various types of fire in the farms, and agricultural waste and weeds in Oman.
During the summer months, there is a higher number of farm fire incidents due to high temperature, dried weeds, and non-compliance of certain farmers and labourers with the preventive instructions.
According to the authorities, the reasons for farm fire include fertiliser self-combustion, high temperature, non-compliance with safety instructions, dried weeds and negligence.

However, with a few safety precautions put in place, these farm fire incidents can be well managed. The authority has listed down a few ways to prevent these incidents. Storing fertilisers and pesticides in dedicated storage facility and avoid direct sunlight, disposing cigarette butts in a safe place away from any flammable material and disposing waste by burning it in small quantities in a dedicated place away from the trees — are some of the way to avoid farm fire incidents.
One can also choose the right time to burn the waste and avoid windy conditions. Care must be taken to not start a BBQ fire near the trees and dried weeds and ensure putting the fire out before leaving the place. The farm fence should be of durable materials and of suitable height to provide protection.
In case of such fires, one must immediately call the emergency number (9999) or (24343666). One can also try to extinguish the fire with whatever is available. Also, as much as possible, ask assistance from reaching the bushed and trees. Lastly, do not hesitate to seek help workers in the neighbouring farms in case of sudden farm fires.
