MUSCAT: One third of Oman’s population is suffering from hypertension, Ministry of Health said.

“High blood pressure is a common chronic disease. In Oman, the prevalence of high blood pressure is 33.3%. It is one of the leading causes of stroke, atherosclerosis, kidney failure and loss of vision,” MOH said in a statement.

According to health experts, hypertension is on the verge of becoming an “epidemic” across the globe, and every person with a blood pressure count of 140/90 is considered to be in the hypertensive category.

Hypertension is a major cardiovascular risk factor that is accountable for more than 10% of deaths globally. Despite projections that by the year 2025, there will be more than 1.5 billion people worldwide suffering from hypertension.
