MUSCAT: The Banking Services Department said that there are seven patients suffering from cancerous tumours who are in dire need of daily platelet transfusions for 10 days.
The department has also called on platelet donors to book an appointment for their donation at the Central Blood Bank in Bausher via WhatsApp (94555648). The department also said that it will not be able to save platelets for more than five days.
The department had published an explanatory video stating that platelets are important for treating many patients who suffer from low platelets levels, cancer patients, dengue fever, and also for some patients who undergo liver and marrow transplants.

Donating platelets is similar to blood donation. It is safe and does not affect the health of the donor, as platelets can be donated every 15 days.
The donation process takes 45-60 minutes, during which blood is withdrawn from the donor, then the platelets are separated from the rest of the blood components by the device. After which the platelets are collected in the designated bags, and finally the rest of the blood components are returned to the donor’s body.
