Indian sailors rescued from Yemen arrive home after Oman’s mediation

Seven Indian sailors were among 14 foreigners rescued on Sunday from Yemen after Oman mediated for their release.

MUSCAT: After spending 112 days in captivity, Indian sailors who were released from Yemen following an intervention by Oman, have arrived in their home country.

The sailors were taken to Muscat on April 24 and were flown to New Delhi on Tuesday on board a special Royal Air Force of Oman flight. One of the sailors belongs to Lucknow, while another hails from Mumbai. Three are from Kerala and the two others are from Haryana and Andhra Pradesh.

According to Indian media reports, three sailors Akhil Reghu from Kayamkulam, Sreejith Sajeevan of Kaipuzha, and Deepesh Meppayur of Kozhikode have arrived in Kerala.

The Indian sailors and at least seven other people from different countries were held captive in Yemen after they seized a merchant vessel RWABEE on January 2 this year.

The release of the Indian sailors and other captives was announced on Tuesday by Oman’s Foreign Minister His Excellency Sayyid Badr Al Busaidi on Twitter.
