MUSCAT: The Court of First Instance in the state of Ibri has issued two judicial rulings, convicting two commercial establishments of a misdemeanour of non-compliance with delivering the goods on time. These establishments also violated the Consumer Protection Law and its regulations.
The details of the first case relate to the Consumer Protection Department receiving a complaint from a consumer stating that he had contracted with a commercial establishment dealing with cement goods to provide building materials worth OMR 2000, of which the institution provided materials worth OMR 1176.
The complainant contacted the corporation to provide the remaining building materials, but the corporation kept stalling the delivery. That is when the consumer submitted a complaint to the administration, which began to take legal measures.

After completing the complaint file, it was referred to the Public Prosecution who investigated and referred it to the competent court, which issued a ruling. The ruling being the corporation would pay a fine of OMR 2824 to the complainant.
The second case was when the administration received a complaint from a consumer stating that he had contracted with a commercial establishment selling cement products to provide building materials worth OMR 3100.
The customer paid an advance amount of OMR 1,600 but the institution only provided half the required amount of the total demand. Upon the delay in providing the rest and unable to finding a solution to deal with the institution, the consumer submitted a complaint to the administration, which took legal measures.
After completing the complaint file, the case was referred to the Public Prosecution which investigated and referred it to the competent court. The court issued a ruling that imposed a fine and obligated the institution to refund the complainant with OMR 1440 bearing all expenses.
The Consumer Protection Authority has called on institutions to abide by the laws and avoid violating the law. It also stressed that it shall not hesitate to take necessary measures guaranteed by law in order to preserve consumers’ rights and save their money.
