MUSCAT: Kerala expats living in Oman is celebrating the spring festival of Vishu on Friday, April 15, 2022.
The festival marks the first day of Medam, the ninth month in the solar calendar followed in Kerala. The celebration started with ‘Kani kanal,’ meaning first sight, for which they had made arrangements the previous night.
On Vishu, Malayalis believe that one should see good things in the morning as this determines their fortunes for the entire year. Hypermarkets across the country displayed traditional items from Kerala to arrange the ‘Kani kanal’.
“It’s been a long time since we enjoyed the festival with whole family. Due to Ramadan, we kept the traditional Vishu sadhya at night,” said Ranjith R, a Muscat based expat who is excited about having a long-awaited family get-together at her residence on Friday to celebrate Vishu.
