Drowning cases are high in Oman: Minister of Health

Al Dakhiliyah Governorate has recorded the highest numbers of deaths due to drowning in Oman.

MUSCAT: A safety campaign organised by the Omani Paediatric Association in cooperation with the Ministry of Health has been established in Oman.

The aim of this campaign is to intensify awareness and spread education and awareness about the dangers of drowning in the Sultanate of Oman, His Excellency Dr. Ahmed Al Saidi, Minister of Health has confirmed during his sponsorship of the closing ceremony of the safety campaign.

Drowning is third highest among other causes of death in the world. The number of drowning cases in the Sultanate of Oman is currently high. The majority of children who lost their lives were under the age of five.

“This is a worrying and a sad matter. The safety campaign was not only allocated for risks but also for workers in the health sector and other sectors who have been trained on first aid and pulmonary resuscitation for the drowned. A cooperation has been made with a number of other sectors to put up guiding signs around the places where there are swimming pools and where rainwater collects in abundance,” the minister said.

His Excellency also indicated that the Oman Health Campaign started in 2019 and lasted for two years. One of its desired results is to continue educating community members and to reduce the number of deaths due to drowning accidents, especially among the younger population.

Al Dakhiliyah Governorate has recorded the highest numbers of deaths due to drowning. Additionally, the geographical landscape of the region includes a large number of valleys, ponds and rain, necessary measures have been taken to avoid any occurrences of drowning.

The closing ceremony of the safety campaign was organised by the Omani Paediatric Association in cooperation with the Department of Women and Child Health and the Department of Education and Health Awareness Programs at the Ministry of Health on Monday. The ceremony was held in the presence of a number of Their Excellencies, general managers and departments of the general health directorates in various governorates and officials in the ministry.
