Trial launch of Big Data Portal announced in Oman

MUSCAT: The National Center for Statistics and Information has announced the trial launch of the Big Data Portal project, a global achievement in the field of using mobile data in statistical work as one of the sources of big data.

The project is based on the use of data obtained from using GPS data for mobile phones to produce statistical indicators in the areas of tourism, individuals, internal mobility and interconnection between sites in the Sultanate of Oman.

The big data portal reviews the countries most visited by the Sultanate of Oman through incoming tourism, as well as local tourism between governorates and states, the interconnection between frequently visited sites, and individuals present during working hours, as well as internal movements between states.

The centre’s launch of the big data portal comes in line with global trends towards increasing the use of data, stressing that locating using mobile phone data ensures the speed of processing and production of statistical indicators, as well as improving temporal and spatial coverage, increasing the speed of response to the requirements of development plans, in addition to covering statistical areas. New development plans may require.

This project is a qualitative leap and a turning point in the production of statistical indicators to develop, build and manage an integrated system at the national level to support the decision-making process in the Sultanate of Oman, including social, economic, environmental and cultural indicators and indicators to measure development performance.

The United Nations Statistics Division had congratulated the Sultanate on this global achievement in the field of big data.

The project was implemented in partnership between the Center, the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, Omantel and Ooredoo, as the project passed through multiple stages in the field of application development, spatial activation and electronic connectivity.
