MUSCAT: The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Consumer Protection Authority, and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries have kickstarted their celebrations of the Gulf Consumer Protection Week. It begins on March 1, every year and continues until March 7.
The aim of the celebrations is to introduce activities and programs of consumer protection bodies and departments, spreading consumer awareness and providing them with knowledge and skills to combat commercial fraud and also strengthen efforts among the GCC states in these arena.
His Excellency Salim bin Ali bin Salim Al Hakmani, Chairman of the Consumer Protection Authority, said that the authority’s participation in the Gulf Consumer Protection Week comes within the framework of unifying the joint Gulf efforts, raising consumer awareness of their rights and duties. It also introduced the provider as a partner in the process also has responsibilities towards this consumer in order to expand the umbrella of consumer protection and access to joint cooperation. In addition to empowering the consumer with knowledge, it also aids in bringing awareness of consumer rights, duties and responsibilities.

He explained, “Within the framework of the programs and events that the authority will implement in conjunction with this event, it will organise many awareness-raising events in the various governorates of the Sultanate of Oman. These will be in conjunction with commercial fraud campaign. Its implementation came after the issuance of the the unified law to combat commercial fraud in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries and to strengthen the legal system to protect markets from harmful practices. Many lectures, exhibitions and awareness convoys will be presented in a number of commercial centres along with various workshops and competitions for consumers to build awareness regarding fraud law commercial.”
The Consumer Protection Authority, established based on Royal Decree No. 26/2011, takes steps to achieve its objectives, several competencies, including educating the consumer about misleading advertisements and more.
