MUSCAT: An emergency meeting of the Council of the League of Arab States was held on Monday with permanent delegates to discuss the developments of the Ukraine crisis.

The meeting was attended by His Excellency Ambassador Abdullah bin Nasser Al-Rahbi, the Sultanate of Oman’s ambassador to Egypt and its permanent representative to the League of Arab States.

In his speech before the meeting, Ambassador Hossam Zaki, Assistant Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, stressed that the League’s General Secretariat is following with great concern the successive developments in Ukraine, and the serious military and humanitarian consequences that can result from them.

He said, “We are aware of the positions of all parties, who are all friendly parties, and we believe that it was necessary to intensify work in order to reach arrangements that satisfy everyone, without resorting to military force, because wars have their sad and unfortunately high costs.”

He stressed that it is imperative for all peace-loving countries and organisations to work quickly, in order to stop the escalation and not fuel it, and restore dialogue and seek to settle the crisis, through diplomacy, which is indispensable in order to avoid the deterioration of the situation and the expansion of the conflict.

He said, “Belonging to the Arab region makes us more aware of the devastating effects of wars and the use of military force, its painful consequences, and the very dangerous negative consequences of that at all levels, especially humanity.”

He called for an end of the current crisis and indulge in diplomatic dialogue, the best way to address the situation, in a manner that leads to restoring stability and achieving security for all.
