KOCHI: In the wake of rising coronavirus cases, India has made 7-day mandatory home quarantine for all passengers who are arriving from foreign countries, news agency ANI reported on Friday.

India on Friday reported 1,17,100 new Covid-19 cases, highest since early June, while the active cases rose to 3,71,363, according to the Union health ministry data.

Earlier, South India state of Kerala also imposed home quarantine rules mandatory due to surge in Covid cases. “The home quarantine norms will be tightened in accordance with the central guidelines, health minister Veena George said on Friday.

RT-PCR tests are conducted on passengers arriving in the airport on the basis of high and low risk countries. An RT-PCR test is a must for all passengers from high-risk nations. If turn negative, they will be in home quarantine for seven days and RT-PCR test should be conducted on the eighth day. If turn negative again, they will have to be in self-observation for another seven days. The samples of those turning positive will be sent for genome testing.

“On the 8th day, they will undergo a RT-PCR test and if negative, they will continue in isolation for a week. The positive samples will be sent for genome sequencing,” said Veena George informed.

Kerala has so far reported 280 cases of the Omicron variant of coronavirus, out of which 186 were from low-risk countries while 64 came from high-risk nations and 30 were contact cases.
