MUSCAT: In what could be a relief to motorists in the country, His Majesty Sultan Haitham Bin Tarik has directed the cabinet to put a cap on fuel prices at October rates until the end of 2022.

In a meeting chaired on Tuesday, His Majesty said the government would bear the cost difference that may result from any potential increase in oil prices. Meanwhile, His Majesty also directed authorities to promote eligible employees in government sector. According to the Ministry of Labour, more than 28,000 employees will be eligible for promotion. In a statement issued the Ministry clarified that the current promotion will be for government employees who are eligible for seniority in 2011. The decision will be implemented from January 1, 2022, the Ministry said.

Speaking to The Arabian Stories, motorists called it as a “National Day gift” from His Majesty the Sultan. “This is truly a National Day gift for us. The fuel prices was skyrocketing and we were finding it difficult as they prices were going up every month. God bless Sultan Haitham,” said Omani citizen Nasser Al Jabri.

Prices will be capped at an average of October’s fees: M91 at 229 baisas/litre, M95 at 239 baisas/litre and diesel at 258 baisas/litre.

According to the statistics issued by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), Oman’s oil refineries reported a 13 per cent increase in fuel production by end of September 2021 compared with 2020.
