MUSCAT: Oman is facing a spike in obesity cases, as more than half of the population is now overweight or obese, the country’s Minister of Health said on Monday.
Speaking during the inauguration of National Monitoring Framework for the Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases, His Excellency Dr. Ahmed Al Saidi also said 33% of people suffer from high-blood pressure. “The first step to control non-communicable diseases and reduce their burden is to include ways to prevent them in development policies through strengthening policies,” Al Saidi said.
According to the Minister, more than 2,000 people are diagnosed with cancer every year. “Early intervention of finding the root cause can help in reducing the cases to a greater extent,” Al Saidi added.
