MUSCAT: “Why is my car consuming more petrol than usual?” This is the question that is trending on social media as motorists complain that the mileage they get has significantly dropped.
On social media, motorists are demanding immediate intervention by the Ministry of Consumer Protection and Investment Promotion (MOCIP) and Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) for an enquiry.
“I paid OMR 5 for Super (M95) and went from Al Khuwair to Al Amerat and came back. Surprisingly, my car fuel touched nearly empty which was not the case before,” said Saad Al Isamili on Twitter.

As per the October fuel prices, M91 cost 229 baisa per litre, M95 stands at 239 baisa per litre and diesel is at 258 baisa. Meanwhile, some motorists raised doubts on the quality of the fuel. In August, MOCIIP issued a statement that it has been following up on the matter of fuel quality in some governorates of the Sultanate “The matter will be taken up with the fuel marketing companies,” the ministry said in the statement.
“It has been more than two months since the sample was taken and we are still waiting impatiently for the results,” said Hamed Al Amri on Twitter.
“We really hope that there will be advanced and accurate devices to examine those samples that were taken,” he added.
Speaking to Muscat FM, Tawfiq Al Lawati, former member of Majlis Al Shura said an independent committee should be formed to check the issue. “These are serious complaints regarding the quality of the fuel. An independent committee must look into this matter,” Al Lawati said.
