MUSCAT: The handling of the coronavirus crisis in the Sultanate has provided few moments to celebrate. In the last five days, there have been zero Covid-19 fatalities in the country, while daily new infections are dropping significantly.
No one will have forgotten the brutal days in June. In June alone, the Sultanate reported 755 Covid deaths. In August, the death toll fell to 251. In the last 20 days, MOH registered only 29 death cases, thanks to the stringent measures taken by the Supreme Committee.
Interestingly the COVID-19 recovery rate has also increased to 97.1 per cent. “The fifth day in a row there are no deaths recorded in the Sultanate. This is a very good sign,” said Ibrahim Al Maimani, a COVID-19 analyst.

The total number of hospital cases touched 49 including 23 ICU cases. Only 22 new infections were registered in the last 24 hours.
“One day doesn’t make for a meaningful milestone. More important is reaching consistently zero death rates, and for that we need the support of the public,” a top official at MOH said.
According to the official as the vaccination programme swung into action, it took on an increasing share of the heavy lifting. “Right now more than 52% target population have received both the doses and that has helped in bringing the cases down. Most important the public is more cautious than ever before, which is the right way to control this pandemic,” he added.
With the country re-opening fully, it will also help the economy to bounce back. “The decisions taken by the Supreme Committee has reflected well and this should help to revive the economy,” said Biju Nambiar, a businessman in Muscat.
