Habib bin Abdulnabi Macki’s demise on Thursday has shocked the sports fraternity in and outside the Sultanate of Oman.
Personally, I feel it is a big loss for sports in Oman, especially the Olympic movement in the Sultanate.
My association with Habib Macki was more than a normal scribe-official relationship and I found him to be a humble and fatherly figure.

Through this note I send my condolences to the bereaved family of Habib Macki
As the chairman and vice-chairman of the Oman Olympic Committee, Habib Macki had worked wonders to make the Sultanate more prominent in the global sports arena.
The most prestigious moment for the Gulf nation was when Macki turned the dream of hosting a major sporting event a reality.
He was instrumental in helping Oman bid for the Second Asian Beach Games in 2010.
In 2011, Macki was honoured with the prestigious Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) merit award during the 30th OCA General Assembly in Tokyo.
Macki also served the Olympic Council of Asia as an executive board member.
He also served as a member of the International Olympic Committee member of the IOC and a member of the IOC Women and Sport Commission and of the IOC Marketing Commission.
Habib Macki’s death has left a huge vacuum as far as sports in Oman is concerned.
