MUSCAT: Former Oman Olympic Committee (OOC) chairman Habib bin Abdulnabi Macki, passed away on Thursday, after a brief illness.

Macki, who was Oman’s first International Olympic Committee (IOC) member, was instrumental in bringing the Asian Beach Games to Oman in 2010. The nine-day event which was arguably the biggest sporting spectacle the country has ever hosted in its history was successful on all counts.

Macki, was the chief architect of Olympic movement in the Sultanate. He was also the former chairman of Oman Basketball Association.

Speaking to The Arabian Stories, T.K. Mohandoss, the former sports editor of Times of Oman, who shared more than a decade-old friendship with Macki was shocked hearing the news on Thursday. “Personally, I feel it is a big loss for sports in Oman, especially the Olympic movement in the Sultanate,” he said.

According to Mohandoss, Macki worked tirelessly to put Oman in the global sporting map. “As the chairman and vice-chairman of the Oman Olympic Committee, Habib Macki had worked wonders to make the Sultanate more prominent in the global sports arena,” he added.
