In his official capacity it’s the norm for him to handle a mountain of seemingly insurmountable challenges every day but what he does stepping out of his office is actually heading off to still more daunting cliffs and epic peaks.

The career and life of this top diplomat who takes a break from building and boosting relations of his country with the rest of the globe to trek the highest mountains of the world is an inspiration to many of his countrymen.

HE. KK Ahsan Wagan, Ambassador of Pakistan, is a well-known figure in the diplomatic circles in Oman. A seasoned diplomat for more than two decades, he was nominated in 2017 for ‘Sitara-e-Imtiaz of Pakistan’ (Star of Distinction), the second highest national award of that nation, for his meritorious services.

Also, he is a recipient of the highest civil award, the Order of Merit, conferred by the Government of Niger in 2019 in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the promotion of bilateral relations between Pakistan and Niger.

Joining the Foreign Service of Pakistan in 1994, Ahsan began his career as Section Officer in the Middle East Division and moved up the ladder with perseverance.

He has a triple master’s degree to his credit in Public Administration, International Relations, and International Trade Law and WTO Law.
Ahsan has wide experience in the diplomatic service having served in various Pakistani missions abroad besides Oman. They include Kathmandu, Nepal; Los Angeles, USA; and Niamey, Niger. He has served as the Second Secretary, Deputy Consul General, Deputy Chief of Mission and Head of Mission/Minister Plenipotentiary.

During his office as Deputy Chief of Mission in Oman he has organised several high-level visits that included ministerial as well as prime ministerial ones and facilitated bilateral visits of Omani officials to Pakistan.

Ahsan has been at the forefront of maintaining cordial relations with government authorities in Oman and leading business entrepreneurs and ensured effective participation of Pakistanis in various cultural and sports events. He has played a pivotal role in organising the Single Country Exhibition of Pakistani products to improve trade and commercial relations between the two countries.

Besides, he has served in various capacities such as Deputy Chief of Protocol, Director of Economic Coordination and Director (Canada & Latin America) at the Americas Division in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Islamabad.

He has represented Pakistan in conferences and seminars worldwide and spoken at various events. He attended the 11th South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) summit, the WTO Ministerial Conference, the 61st United Nations General Assembly session in New York and the fourth South Asia Security Conference.

He was part of the Pakistani official delegation at the fifth Developing-8 summit in Bali, Indonesia, as well as the ministerial delegation to negotiate the Non-Agricultural Market Access Agreement under the World Trade Organisation.

A passionate trekker and mountaineer, he has trekked the highest mountains in the world, including K2, Mount Everest, Mont Blanc, Mount Whitney and Mount Kilimanjaro.

Ahsan’s career and life history is an inspiration to many.
