NEW DELHI : N. Chandra Babu Naidu, the state’s chief minister, reported that the cyclone, accompanied by strong winds and heavy rain, caused widespread damage to roads and power grids in 14 coastal districts, prompting Indian authorities to request urgent support from the Indian central government.
The Indian Meteorological Department stated that the cyclone made landfall as an extremely severe cyclonic storm, with wind speeds reaching 135 kilometres per hour before gradually decreasing in intensity as it moved inland.
The storm damaged crops on an estimated 79,000 acres, particularly banana and coconut plantations in the Konaseema area, and caused power outages due to uprooted trees and light poles.
Indian authorities had evacuated about 180,000 people from low-lying, flood-prone areas as a precaution, in addition to cancelling some train journeys, securing fishing boats and deploying medical teams in the affected areas.
