Oman police to review heavy vehicle safety standards and driving licence rules

The Royal Oman Police has formed a committee to review driving licence requirements and heavy vehicle safety standards, including their suitability for operating conditions in Oman.

MUSCAT : Lieutenant General Hassan bin Mohsin Al Shraiqi, Inspector General of Police and Customs, issued Decision No. 137/2026 establishing the committee, which is chaired by the Director General of Traffic and includes specialists from the ROP.

The committee will review the conditions and procedures set out in the Traffic Law and its executive regulations governing the issuance of driving licences, including licences for heavy vehicle drivers.

It will also assess existing durability and safety requirements for heavy vehicles to determine whether they reflect practical operating conditions and align with relevant international practices.

The review forms part of the ROP’s efforts to develop the traffic system and strengthen safety standards for motorists and other road users across Oman.
