Born Vishwanath Patekar in Maharashtra in 1951, he began his Hindi film career with Gaman in 1978. Over the following decades, he built a body of work that crossed genres, from the intensity of Parinda, Krantiveer and Ab Tak Chhappan to the humour of the Welcome films.
His portrayal of Uday Shetty in Welcome introduced him to a younger generation of audiences, while his performance in the Marathi film Natsamrat further demonstrated his range.
A recipient of three National Film Awards, Patekar was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2013 for his contribution to cinema and the arts. He also made his directorial debut with Prahaar: The Final Attack in 1991.
Beyond the screen, he was associated with initiatives supporting farmers and families affected by agricultural distress.
