Asian markets fall despite Wall Street reaching record highs

Most Asian stock markets declined in trading today despite US stocks closing at record highs on Wall Street in the previous session.

TOKYO: Japan’s Nikkei 225 index fell 0.9 percent to 70,284.81 points, while South Korea’s Kospi index also declined 0.9 percent to 6,876.76 points.
Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index dropped 0.6 percent to 24,129.96 points, while Taiwan’s Taiex slipped 0.2 percent. China’s Shanghai Stock Exchange remained closed for a national holiday.
In Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 index edged up 0.1 percent to 8,740.10 points.
On Wall Street, US stocks rose to fresh records in the previous session despite ongoing market challenges.
The S&P 500 gained 0.6 percent to 7,818.93 points, setting a new record after reaching a previous high last August. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.5 percent to 51,521.28 points, while the Nasdaq Composite advanced 0.4 percent to a record 27,599.79 points, following its previous record set last Monday.
Shares of artificial intelligence-related companies continued to provide significant support to the US market. Nvidia shares have gained 28.3 percent this year, roughly twice the pace of the broader US market over the same period.
Among individual stocks, Constellation Energy Group jumped 12.2 percent after announcing a long-term agreement to supply Google with electricity equivalent to the output of a new nuclear reactor.
Option Care Health shares surged 32.6 percent after CD&R and McKesson announced plans to acquire the intravenous therapy services company for $32.05 per share, valuing the company at approximately $5.8 billion.
